Paradise Fishing Lodge, El Salvador

 

Yesterday was the weekly gathering at Casa L&L. I got to meet the few fellow cruisers in the area, while feasting on BBQ chicken and enjoying an afternoon soaking in the pool. It's times like these that make you wonder why everyone isn't down here doing the same.

 

Of course, today it is back to the heat and humidity on the un-airconditioned boat. For some reason it seems particularly bad today. It does not help that I am virtually alone at the marina - no one to talk, or complain to. Where is everybody?

 

As for the boat, leaving it sitting alone for the past year has not done it any good. The list of things that need attention is just too long to comprehend. It hardly seems practical to try and fix anything right now, knowing that it will be sitting here for at least another 6 months before we possibly try to resume our journey. So for now, I have just done some small, routine maintenance items, run the engine a couple of times. equalized the batteries and such.

 

I head back to Canada in two days.

El Salvador Revisited

Bahia del Sol, El Salvador

 

I have arrived in El Salvador, via Minneapolis and Atlanta. Everything went smoothly and I spent my first night on the boat, cooking slowly in the heat and humidity. 

At this time, I have no internet on the the boat (at Paradise Fishing Lodge) and it is not worth getting a phone for only a week. So today, I drove to the 4 miles to Bahia del Sol resort, where I can get a connection.

 

Things are really dead here. Hardly any cruisers around, and no one else either. It promises to be a long week at this rate.

A change of scenery

The high point of our last couple of weeks; A road trip to our friend's cabin at nearby Seba Beach, where we spent the night and put the finishing touches on a fence-builiding project that was started last summer.

 

Tomorrow, I am making a quick trip to El Salvador to reacquaint myself with the boat. A week in the heat and humidity at the Paradise Fishing Lodge and Marina should make me really appreciate Edmonton's summer again. Susanne will hold down the fort here in my absence.

A long year draws to a close

We came back to Edmonton almost a year ago, in order for Susanne to be with her mother after she suffered some serious health issues. It has been a hard year for both of them. After a series of setbacks and miraculous recoveries, at times looking very dire and at other times looking hopeful, Susanne's mother passed away last week, somewhat unexpectedly in the end.

 

For us, it means we have to regroup a bit and decide where we go from here. There is no real rush, but among other issues, we will have to find a new home address, and figure out what to do with our few remaining non-boat belongings. We are not sure when we will be able to get back to the boat, and this is not really the appropriate season to be starting our previously planned northward journey to Mexico. Fortunately we are confident with leaving the boat in its current location at Paradise Marina in El Salvador - I am sure they are taking good care of her there.

 

One day at a time...

Short Days

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Summer has come and gone. Fall has come and gone. Christmas has come and gone.

It is a new year and we are still in Edmonton.

Unfortunately, Susanne's mother's health remains precarious. Things are starting to look up a bit, but it is not likely that Sue is going to want to travel very far from home for some time yet.

Right now we are immersed in Winter. So far, it has been a pretty mild season - we can only hope global warming is here to stay. The most depressing thing is the short days, but we are past the shortest day already and it will only get better from now on.

This coming week, we are going to test our limits and spend a week away from Edmonton. Our very good friends, Tony and Julia, have invited us to share a condo at Panorama, a winter wonderland just over the border in British Columbia. We may or may not do some downhill skiing, but we will certainly take advantage of the other sports available, and the hot tubs for sure.
